Asclera Sclerotherapy for Leg Veins and Spider Veins

If you are bothered by visible leg veins, Asclera sclerotherapy offers a safe, in-office treatment to fade spider veins and small varicose veins (reticular veins). Dr. Kristin Egan provides Asclera treatments in Manhattan Beach and Torrance, helping patients restore smoother-looking legs with minimal downtime.

What Asclera Treats

  • Uncomplicated spider veins (about ≤ 1 mm in diameter)

  • Uncomplicated small varicose veins called reticular veins (about 1–3 mm)

How Asclera Works

Asclera (polidocanol) is a prescription sclerosing medication injected directly into the targeted vein. It gently irritates the vein lining (endothelium), causing the vein to close. Over time, the body naturally absorbs the closed vein and it fades from view.

Why Patients Choose Asclera

  • Non-surgical, office-based procedure

  • Typically quick sessions with little to no downtime

  • Precise treatment of visible leg veins

  • Well-tolerated for most patients

  • High patient satisfaction: in studies, about 86% of patients were satisfied or very satisfied with their results

Who Is a Good Candidate?

  • Adults with visible leg spider veins or small reticular veins

  • Patients seeking a nonsurgical option to improve the look of leg veins

  • Individuals who can follow simple aftercare (compression and walking)

Who Should Not Receive Asclera

  • People with a known allergy to polidocanol

  • Anyone with acute thromboembolic disease (active blood clots)

  • Pregnant individuals (treatment is typically postponed)

  • People with significant arterial disease or certain uncontrolled medical conditions—Dr. Egan will review your health history to ensure safety

What to Expect on Treatment Day

  1. 1

Consultation and vein evaluation: Dr. Egan examines your leg veins and reviews your medical history.

  2. 2

Preparation: The skin is cleansed; photos may be taken for your records.

  3. 3

Treatment: A fine needle delivers small amounts of Asclera into the targeted veins. You may feel mild tingling or pressure.

  4. 4

Post-treatment: Compression stockings or bandages are placed, and you'll be encouraged to walk shortly after. Most patients return to normal light activities the same day.

Aftercare and Recovery

  • Wear compression stockings or bandages as directed (often for several days; sometimes longer for reticular veins).

  • Walk daily to support circulation.

  • Avoid strenuous exercise, hot baths/saunas, and direct sun on treated areas for a few days.

  • Do not fly long distances immediately after treatment unless cleared by your provider.

  • Mild redness, itching, tenderness, or bruising can occur and usually resolves on its own.

When You'll See Results

Treated veins typically begin to fade over several weeks, with continued improvement for 1–3 months. Many patients benefit from a series of sessions to address different veins or to refine results.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

The number of sessions varies by the size and number of veins. Some patients achieve their goals in 1–2 visits, while others may need a few sessions spaced several weeks apart. Dr. Egan will create a personalized plan during your consultation.

Safety and Possible Side Effects

  • Common and temporary: redness, swelling, itching, tenderness, bruising, or localized skin discoloration.

  • Less common: small surface vessels (matting) that usually fade over time.

  • Rare but serious: allergic reactions, blood clots, visual changes, or skin injury if the medication leaks outside the vein or is injected into an artery. Seek urgent care for severe pain, sudden swelling, warmth, chest pain, or shortness of breath.

Is Asclera Right for Larger Varicose Veins?

Asclera is intended for uncomplicated spider veins and small reticular veins in the legs. Larger varicose veins or underlying vein valve issues may require evaluation by a vein specialist for additional or alternative treatments.
