EarWell Infant Ear Correction for Newborn Ear Deformities

EarWell is a gentle, non-surgical newborn ear molding system used to reshape certain ear deformities in the first weeks of life. By guiding the soft cartilage into a more typical contour while a baby's ear is still flexible, EarWell can often prevent the need for surgery later in childhood.

Time-sensitive: The best window for EarWell

For the best results, start EarWell as early as possible—ideally within the first 7–10 days of life. If you notice an ear shape concern, please contact our office promptly for an urgent newborn appointment.

Who is a good candidate?

  • Newborns with pliable ears in the first weeks of life

  • Parents who notice ear shape concerns at birth or shortly after

  • Ears with shape deformities (folding, lidding, rim irregularities, or protrusion) rather than true tissue loss

  • Families able to attend short follow-up visits for device adjustments, uaually every 2 weeks.

How EarWell works

Newborn ear cartilage is naturally flexible due to maternal hormones present after birth. EarWell uses small, soft components to gently mold the ear into a more typical shape as the cartilage firms over several weeks. Treatment is performed in the office, involves no needles or anesthesia, and babies generally feed and sleep normally with the device in place.

What to expect: step-by-step

  1. 1

Assessment: Dr. Egan examines your baby's ears, explains the type of deformity, and confirms candidacy.

  2. 2

Fitting: The EarWell device is comfortably placed and adjusted to your baby's ear shape.

  3. 3

Follow-ups: Brief visits every 2 weeks to fine-tune the molding and check the skin.

  4. 4

Typical duration: Most treatments last about 4–6 weeks, depending on the deformity and the baby's age at start.

  5. 5

Removal: The device is removed once the new ear shape is stable.

Benefits of early ear molding

  • Non-surgical approach in the newborn period

  • Well-tolerated by infants; no anesthesia required

  • Can reduce or eliminate the need for future ear surgery

  • Results that typically hold as the cartilage firms over time

  • Short, in-office visits with minimal disruption to daily care

Common ear deformities treated with EarWell

  • Prominent or protruding ear in the newborn period

  • Lop ear (downward folding of the upper ear)

  • Constricted or cup ear

  • Stahl's ear (extra fold or point in the upper ear)

  • Lidding and helical rim deformities

Why timing matters

The newborn ear is most moldable in the first 1–2 weeks after birth, when natural hormones make the cartilage especially flexible. While treatment can still be effective beyond this window, success rates are generally higher and treatment can be shorter when EarWell is started early. If your baby is a few weeks old, please reach out—Dr. Egan will assess whether molding is still likely to help.

Comfort, safety, and daily life

EarWell is designed to be gentle. Most babies tolerate the device very well and can breastfeed, bottle-feed, and sleep normally. You will receive guidance on bathing, clothing, and keeping the device clean and dry between visits.

Possible, usually minor side effects

  • Temporary skin redness or irritation under the device

  • Mild pressure marks that resolve after adjustments or removal

  • Occasional device shifts that require a quick in-office re-fit

  • Rare superficial skin breakdown, monitored and managed by your care team

Results you can expect

When started early, newborn ear molding has been shown in clinical practice to achieve high success rates, often over 90% for many deformities. Most families see steady improvement within the first few weeks. Once the ear cartilage firms in the new position, the correction is typically maintained as your child grows.
