Laser Hair Removal for Long-Lasting Hair Reduction
Enjoy smoother skin with less maintenance in Manhattan Beach and Torrance

Laser Hair Removal for Long-Lasting Hair Reduction
Enjoy smoother skin with less maintenance. Dr. Kristin Egan offers laser hair removal in Manhattan Beach and at her cosmetic-only office in Torrance, helping reduce unwanted hair on the face and body with minimal downtime. Treatments target the hair follicle to achieve long-term hair reduction—so you can shave less and feel confident year-round.
How Laser Hair Removal Works
Laser energy is attracted to the pigment (melanin) in hair. The light is converted to heat, which disables the hair follicle during its active growth phase. Because hairs cycle through growth at different times, a series of sessions is needed for the best result. Most patients complete 6–8 treatments, typically spaced 4–8 weeks apart depending on the area, with occasional maintenance sessions to keep results looking their best.
Is It Right for Me?
Laser hair removal works best on darker hair because it contains more pigment for the laser to target. It can be performed safely on many skin tones when the device and settings are chosen appropriately. Very light blond, red, gray, and most peach fuzz hairs respond poorly. Active tans increase the risk of side effects, so treatment is delayed until your skin returns to its usual tone. During your consultation, Dr. Egan will review your goals, skin type, hair color, and medical history to design a safe, effective plan.
You may be a good candidate if you:
Have unwanted hair on the face or body and prefer a longer-lasting reduction than shaving or waxing
Have darker hair (on any skin tone) in the treatment area
Can avoid sun exposure and tanning before and after sessions
Are willing to complete a full series and occasional maintenance
We may postpone or tailor treatment if you:
Have a recent tan, sunburn, or self-tanner on the area
Are using photosensitizing medications or have certain skin conditions (we'll review your medications and history)
Have active skin infection, open wounds, or a rash in the area
Are pregnant or breastfeeding (often deferred out of caution)
What to Expect on Treatment Day
- 1
Consultation and Skin Assessment: We confirm candidacy, discuss goals, and review your prep.
- 2
Prep and Protection: Your skin is cleansed and you'll wear protective eyewear.
- 3
Treatment: You may feel a quick, warm snap with each pulse. Cooling measures help keep you comfortable, and sessions are usually brief.
- 4
Post-Care: Mild redness and swelling around follicles are common for a few hours. You can resume most activities right away while following simple aftercare.
Before Your Appointment: Simple Prep
Shave the area 12–24 hours before your visit (do not wax, pluck, or use depilatory creams for 2–4 weeks beforehand).
Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanner for at least 2 weeks (often 4 weeks is ideal).
Arrive with clean skin—no makeup, deodorant, lotions, or perfumes on the area.
Pause exfoliating acids and retinoids on the treatment area for 2–3 days beforehand.
Tell us about your medications, especially those that increase sun sensitivity.
Aftercare and Recovery
Apply cool compresses and a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer as needed.
Use broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily and avoid tanning throughout your series.
Skip hot tubs, saunas, and intense workouts for 24–48 hours.
Avoid exfoliants, retinoids, and perfumed products on the area for 2–3 days.
Do not pluck or wax between sessions—shaving is okay.
Expect treated hairs to shed over 1–2 weeks; this can look like stubble before it releases.
Results and Maintenance
Most patients notice less regrowth and finer, lighter hairs after a few sessions, with the most visible change after completing the series. Results are long-lasting, and many people remain satisfied for months to years. Because hormones and hair cycles vary, occasional maintenance treatments help sustain your smoothest outcome.
Safety and Possible Side Effects
When performed by trained professionals with appropriate settings, laser hair removal is a safe, well-tolerated procedure. Temporary redness, swelling around follicles, or mild sensitivity are the most common effects and typically resolve within hours to a couple of days. Less common risks include pigment changes, blistering, or ingrown hairs. Eye protection is mandatory during treatment. We select technology and parameters to suit your skin type—including options appropriate for deeper skin tones—to maximize results and minimize risk.
