Thyroid Surgery (Thyroidectomy)
Expert surgical treatment for thyroid conditions

Thyroid Surgery (Thyroidectomy)
Thyroid surgery, or thyroidectomy, is a procedure to remove part or all of the thyroid gland. Dr. Kristin Egan performs thyroidectomy to treat thyroid cancer, suspicious or growing nodules, recurrent cysts, overactive thyroid conditions, and goiters that cause pressure symptoms. Surgery is done under general anesthesia, and specialized monitoring helps protect the nerves that control your vocal cords.
Common reasons for thyroidectomy
Thyroid cancer or suspicion of malignancy based on biopsy results
Large or growing nodules that cause cosmetic concerns or pressure symptoms
Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) that does not respond to medical treatment
Recurrent thyroid cysts that affect quality of life
Large goiter causing difficulty breathing or swallowing
Types of thyroid surgery
Total thyroidectomy: Complete removal of both thyroid lobes for cancer or large goiters
Hemithyroidectomy (lobectomy): Removal of one thyroid lobe for nodules or smaller cancers
Subtotal thyroidectomy: Removal of most of the thyroid, preserving some tissue to maintain function
Completion thyroidectomy: Removal of remaining thyroid tissue after previous partial surgery
What to expect during thyroid surgery
Thyroidectomy is performed under general anesthesia in a hospital setting. Dr. Egan uses specialized nerve monitoring to protect the recurrent laryngeal nerves that control vocal cord function. The procedure typically takes 1-3 hours depending on complexity. A small horizontal incision is made in the lower neck crease to minimize visible scarring.
Recovery and hospital stay
Overnight hospital observation is typical to monitor calcium levels and voice function
Drain may be placed temporarily to prevent fluid collection
Voice may be hoarse initially but usually improves over 2-6 weeks
Return to work typically within 1-2 weeks depending on job requirements
No heavy lifting over 10 pounds for 2 weeks to allow proper healing
Thyroid hormone replacement
After total thyroidectomy, lifelong thyroid hormone replacement medication is necessary to maintain normal metabolism. For partial thyroidectomy, the remaining thyroid tissue may produce adequate hormone, but monitoring is essential. Dr. Egan coordinates with endocrinology specialists to optimize hormone levels and ensure proper follow-up care.
Risks and complications
Temporary or permanent changes in voice or vocal cord function
Low calcium levels (hypocalcemia) if parathyroid glands are affected
Bleeding or infection at the surgical site
Need for lifelong thyroid hormone replacement after total thyroidectomy
Scarring, though typically minimal with careful technique
Long-term outlook
Most patients do very well after thyroid surgery with proper hormone replacement and follow-up care. For thyroid cancer, regular monitoring ensures early detection of any recurrence. Voice changes are usually temporary, and most patients return to normal speaking and singing abilities. Follow-up appointments help monitor healing, hormone levels, and overall recovery.
