What to expect during thyroid surgery

Recovery and hospital stay

• Overnight hospital observation is typical to monitor calcium levels and voice function

• Drain may be placed temporarily to prevent fluid collection

• Voice may be hoarse initially but usually improves over 2-6 weeks

• Return to work typically within 1-2 weeks depending on job requirements

• No heavy lifting over 10 pounds for 2 weeks to allow proper healing

Thyroid hormone replacement

After total thyroidectomy, lifelong thyroid hormone replacement medication is necessary to maintain normal metabolism. For partial thyroidectomy, the remaining thyroid tissue may produce adequate hormone, but monitoring is essential. Risks and complications

• Temporary or permanent changes in voice or vocal cord function

• Low calcium levels (hypocalcemia) if parathyroid glands are affected
