Nose Surgery

Nose surgery or rhinoplasty can improve the appearance and proportion of your nose, enhancing facial harmony and self-confidence.  Rhinoplasty can also involve the straightening of a deviated septum, or inside, of the nose which is known as septoplasty or septorhinoplasty.

Nose surgery can be done as a cosmetic enhancement or as a procedure to improve your ability to breathe through your nose or it can be a combination of both.  Dr. Kristin Egan is highly trained in revision rhinoplasty which is the surgery on a nose that has been previously operated on.  Often these patients suffer from problems breathing through their nose.

You are able to go home after the surgery and most patients are able to return to work within a week.  You may have stitches on the bottom of your nose or some bruising around the eyes after the surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions about Rhinoplasty:

What is rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is a surgery designed to reshape the nose. A rhinoplasty can be designed to make the nose smaller, reduce the bridge/hump of the nose, narrow the nose, make changes to the nasal tip, lift a droopy tip, and many other requests. Many patients who suffer nasal fractures, later seek rhinoplasty.

I don’t know what is wrong with my nose, but I just don’t like it.
It is often difficult for patients to understand what they don’t like about their noses which is why it is important to visit with a surgeon who will take the time to explain the underlying anatomy and help you to understand what changes will achieve a nose that you do like!

How old do I have to be to have a rhinoplasty?
Most surgeons wait until a patient has finished their growth spurt, usually around age 15-18. It is also important to consider the mental maturity of the patient to be sure that the patient is ready to undergo an operation.

How old is too old to have a rhinoplasty?
If you are in good physical and mental health and can undergo general anesthesia, you are a good candidate for a rhinoplasty.

I can’t breathe through my nose, can a rhinoplasty help?
A rhinoplasty is often designed to improve nasal obstruction so that the patient can breathe better. Many patients choose to undergo a rhinoplasty designed both to improve breathing and appearance.

Will my nose be packed?
Dr. Egan does not use nasal packing, however if you have additional surgery on your nasal septum, you will have very thin plastic sheets inside your nose for a week to assist in healing.

How long does a rhinoplasty take?
A rhinoplasty can take anywhere from 1-4 hours depending on how much work is done and if additional procedures are done to obtain cartilage for grafts. A consultation with Dr. Egan will provide you with a more exact time estimate.

What is the recovery after a rhinoplasty like?
Most patients do not experience significant pain or nausea and are given pain medications to take home after surgery. If the bones have to be broken during the surgery, some patients have bruising under the eyes that lasts for about a week. A little bleeding from the nose is common postoperatively and your nose may feel stuffy.
